Levi Long
Born about 1801, in North Carolina by three records and in South Carolina by two, which is a disagreement his own children inherited and never settled.
He married Elizabeth Jones and they had thirteen children that the censuses account for. The first nine were born in the Carolinas; the last four were born in Georgia. The turn comes between 1843 and 1845, and the family landed in Union County, in the far northern corner of the state where Georgia runs up against North Carolina and Tennessee. In 1850 the whole household is on a single page there, fifteen people under one roof, Levi and Elizabeth and all thirteen children, the eldest of them Lucinda at nineteen.
When Fannin County was cut out of Union and Gilmer in 1854 the family did not move so much as get resorted. By 1860 he is enumerated in the 33rd Subdivision of Gilmer County and he stays in Gilmer for the rest of his life: the 1870 census has him there with Elizabeth, a grown daughter and a married daughter back home, and the 1880 census finds the two of them at Tickanetley, alone in the house at last, seventy nine and seventy six.
He died in 1886 and is buried at Dial, back over the Fannin County line. Elizabeth died the same year and lies beside him.
