Born in North Carolina on 10 September 1840, the seventh of the thirteen children of Levi Long and Elizabeth Jones. The family came down out of North Carolina into the Georgia mountains when she was three or four: her brother Levi, whom the 1850 census makes born in 1843, is the last child entered as born in North Carolina, and her sister Martha, born in 1845, is the first entered as born in Georgia. In 1850 the whole household is on one page of the Union County census, and Jane is ten years old.

She is gone from her father's house by the next census, married, and living one county over. Her maiden name went with her only barely. Four censuses take her as Brookshire and nothing else, and the 1900 enumerator wrote her as Louisia G.

She was about nineteen when the first of her children was born, and she was still bearing them at thirty nine. Fifteen are known by name. Thirteen of them were alive and at home in Cherokee County on one census page in 1880, from William at twenty down to Columbus at one, and the two born before that, Mary and Louis, are in the 1860 household in Fannin County. Mary died at Woodstock in 1935 as Mary Gravett; nothing is known of Louis after 1860.

Her husband Levi died in 1916. She lived on another seventeen years and died on 9 October 1933, a month past her ninety third birthday. She is buried in Cherokee County, Georgia.
