Lieut. Samuel Sprague
Samuel Sprague was born at Duxbury about 1670, a grandson of Francis Sprague, who had arrived in 1623 and settled near the Nook. He was orphaned at six. His father, John Sprague, joined Michael Peirce's company in Philip's War and was killed at Pawtucket on 26 March 1676. His mother, Ruth Basset, married again.
He married Ruth Alden on 29 November 1694 and had nine children by her. Noah was born on 18 January 1696/7, Elizabeth on 4 July 1699, Nathaniel on 10 January 1702/3, Samuel on 23 June 1704 and Mary on 20 December 1706. Mary died on 19 April 1708. Priscilla was born on 18 March 1709, and Abial, Micah and Ruth came after her, Ruth in 1714.
The town used him. He was chosen constable on 6 March 1700 and town clerk on 16 March 1709, though he held that only a year. His trade shows up in the town records for 1708 as a receipt: a hundred and eighty pounds paid him in full for erecting the meeting house at Duxbury. The Duxbury history calls him a carpenter.
About 1710 he moved south to Rochester and he died there on 25 July 1740, in his seventy first year, without a will. His widow Ruth and his eldest son Noah were appointed administrators. The land was not divided until 10 December 1763, twenty three years later. By then his sons Nathaniel and Micah and his daughter Elizabeth were dead, and their children stood in their places. Elizabeth's children took her sixth.
