Lillian Belle Hendrick
Lillian Belle Hendrick was born in Pennsylvania on 24 September 1865. She was the younger of two daughters of Eli E. Hendrick and Caroline Permelia Hackett. Her sister Mary Emma had been born in Michigan about 1860. Her father was then building an oil business, first refining lubricating oil and later running refineries at Franklin and Carbondale.
The 1880 census found her at Carbondale, "Lillian B. Hendrick," aged fourteen. The household held her father, listed as an oil refiner, her mother, her sister, and her aunt and uncle, Mary A. Grow and the Rev. W. B. Grow, a Baptist minister.
She was educated first at home under a private tutor, Professor William T. Colville of Kenyon College in Ohio. She then went to the Packer Institute in Brooklyn, a school for girls. Her sister went to Vassar.
About 1885 or 1886 she married her former tutor, who was sixteen years older. They lived at Gambier, Ohio, the home of Kenyon College, where he was a professor. Their son Kenneth Hendrick Colville was born there on 28 May 1891; the Ohio birth register calls her "Lillian Hendricks." Soon afterwards the family moved to Carbondale, and her husband became treasurer of her father's Hendrick Manufacturing Company.
At Carbondale she had three more children: Jessie in 1895, Dorothy in December 1896 and William Thomas Jr. in 1902. Her mother died at Philadelphia in March 1895. Her father, a former mayor of Carbondale, died in 1909. The Colvilles lived at 101 Lincoln Avenue, in the city's first ward. Both daughters went to Wellesley College. In 1920 Dorothy married Benjamin George Dann, and their first child, Dorothy, was born at Carbondale in July 1921 "in her grandmother's house," probably Lillian's.
Lillian was widowed in September 1934. She died at Carbondale on 23 September 1943, the day before her seventy-eighth birthday. She was buried at Willow View Cemetery in Clifford Township, Susquehanna County. Her flat stone reads "LILLIAN B. HENDRICK / WIFE OF / WILLIAM T. COLVILLE / 1865 - 1943."
