Caroline Permelia Hackett
Caroline Permelia Hackett, called Carrie, was born in New York on 4 April 1834. Her parents are not named in any record found. Her sister Mary A. was much older, born in England about 1817, so the family may have come from England between those two births. Mary married the Rev. W. B. Grow, a Baptist minister.
In 1853, at Plymouth, Michigan, Caroline married Eli E. Hendrick, a young wood-turner. Over the next decade he tried barrel staves, a cooperage in Iowa and the selling of engine governors before he found his fortune in lubricating oil. Their daughter Mary Emma was born in Michigan about 1860. Their second daughter, Lillian Belle, was born in Pennsylvania in 1865, after Eli's oil business had brought them east.
The family settled at Carbondale, where Eli ran a refinery and later founded the Hendrick Manufacturing Company. The 1880 census lists Caroline there with Eli, the two daughters, and her sister and brother-in-law, the Grows. Both daughters were tutored at home by Professor William T. Colville; Mary Emma went on to Vassar and Lillian to the Packer Institute in Brooklyn. Mary Emma married A. P. Trautwein, and Lillian married Professor Colville. In 1893 Eli was elected mayor of Carbondale.
Caroline died at the Hotel Hanover in Philadelphia on the evening of 13 March 1895, of congestion of the lungs, aged 60. She was buried in Maplewood Cemetery at Carbondale. Her remains were later moved, with Eli's and the Grows', to Willow View Cemetery in Clifford Township, Susquehanna County, where a HENDRICK family monument stands over the plot.
