Lorenz Hartung
Lorenz Hartung was born in 1830 in Prussia. His gravestone at Oxford, Kansas, gives the year. The 1880 census gives Prussia as the birthplace of both him and his parents. His first name also appears as Lawrence and Lawrentz.
A family tree places his birth on 14 December 1830 at Geisleden, a Catholic village in the Eichsfeld, then part of the Prussian province of Saxony. The same tree names his parents as Balthasar Johann Hartung and Elisabeth Semmelrogge. It gives his marriage to Katharina Hasselwander on 30 March 1862 in St. Louis County, Missouri. That fits the census, which calls him Prussian, but the tree cites no church record for either event.
His wife Kate, born Catharine Hasselwander in 1842, was German too. Their first five children were born in Missouri: Margaret about 1863, Annie about 1865, Edward in 1866, Clara about 1869 and Frances about 1871. By about 1873 the family had moved to Kansas, where Amanda was born. Katurah, called Tura, followed in October 1876, and John Adam on 25 February 1883 at Oxford.
On 14 June 1880 the census taker found the family farming in Oxford Township, Sumner County. Oxford is a small town on the Arkansas River in south central Kansas, between Wellington and Winfield. Lorenz was 49 and Catharine 38. Margaret, 17, and Annie, 15, kept house. Edward, 13, was a plowboy. Clara, Frances, Amanda and Ketura were at home.
In 1895 the state census still had them there. L. Hartung was 64 and Catharine 54, with three of the children at home, the youngest John, 12.
Several of the children went south into Oklahoma after it opened for settlement. Edward farmed near Garber, in Garfield County. John farmed near Billings and later near Morrison, in Noble County. Both families came back to visit. In the autumn of 1906 the wife of Ed Hartung spent two weeks at Oxford with his parents. In January 1911 the Billings paper reported that John had left on a Saturday "to spend a week visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hartung of Oxford, Kansas."
Lorenz Hartung died at Oxford in 1925, at about 94 or 95. A family tree gives the date as 25 June. Kate died the next year. They are buried in the Oxford Cemetery under one grey granite stone headed HARTUNG, with LORENZ 1830 1925 on one side and KATE 1842 1926 on the other. Their daughter FRANCES 1871 1905 is cut below them.
