Lorraine Belville
Lorraine Belville was born in Missouri in 1921. She was the eldest child of Orval M. Belville and Estella Marie Abbey, called Stella, who had married when he was eighteen and she sixteen. Her brother Robert was born at Independence, Missouri, on 4 March 1923, and a second brother, Kenneth, in California about 1933.
By 1925 the family had moved west to Richmond, California, where her mother's father also lived. In April 1930 they were renting a house in the city of Pittsburg, in Contra Costa County, for $35 a month. Her father worked as a laborer at the steel works. Lorraine was eight.
Ten years later, in April 1940, she was eighteen and still single, living with her parents and brothers in a house her father owned just outside Pittsburg. That October a young man from Pennsylvania, Arthur Raymond Hommond, registered for the draft at Pittsburg. He was living with his uncle, a contractor named Elmer Leroy Cupp, and working for him. Within a few months Lorraine and Arthur were married.
Their first child, Lloyd, was born on 20 March 1941 and died the next day. Five more children followed, all born in Contra Costa County: Wilda Jean, on 10 March 1942; Wynema Jane, 29 September 1944; Wayne Jerome, 23 December 1945; Wanetta June, 29 March 1949; and Wyman Joseph, 29 June 1955.
In April 1950 she was 28 and keeping house in Contra Costa County with Arthur, a plasterer, and four of the children, Wilda, Wynema, Wayne and the baby Wanetta. Her parents were still in Pittsburg.
Arthur died in 1980. Her mother died in August 1981 and her father in April 1985, and both are buried in Oak View Memorial Park at Antioch, where Arthur also lies. Lorraine outlived Arthur by forty six years and died in 2026.
