Louis Michael Cresta
Louis Michael Cresta was born on 24 January 1890 at Boston, Massachusetts. The city entered him in its birth register as Luigi Cresta, son of Felice Cresta and his wife Maria. Both his parents had been born in Italy. A family account gives his mother's full name as Maria Giuseppa Colucci and says the family came from the province of Avellino, inland from Naples. His father was a barber.
Louis was the eldest of four children born in Boston. Nicolino, later Nicholas George, came in 1893, then Maria, and Theresa in 1895. An older brother, Angelo, had been born in Italy. Their mother died at Boston in September 1897. Their father married again in November 1898 and died of tuberculosis at the state hospital at Tewksbury in July 1899. Louis was nine.
The family account says the four children were placed in an orphanage and then in foster homes. It says the Carleo family brought Louis to New Jersey. They brought several orphans down from the Boston area to work on their farm. Louis stayed in Morris County for the rest of his life.
He married Florence Myrtle Snyder, who had been born in Virginia. They had four children. Their first two daughters died small: Florence Helen, born 1917, died in 1918, and Hazel Evelyn, born 1918, died in 1920. Their son Harold was born on 12 June 1920, and their daughter Dorothy Theresa in 1922. In January 1920 Louis, Florence and the baby Hazel were living at Dover.
In 1930 the family lived at Rockaway, Morris County: Louis, 40, born in Massachusetts to Italian parents; Florence, 37, born in Virginia; Harold, 9; and Dorothy, 8. In 1940 Louis, 49, was in the same house he had lived in since 1935, in the Mount Hope section of Rockaway Township, with Harold, 19, and Dorothy, 17.
Florence died in 1941 at Dover. Louis outlived her by fifteen years. He died at Rockaway on 13 September 1956, aged 66. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Randolph. The family account says the grave is unmarked, in the northwest corner of the cemetery between an oak tree and the dirt pile at the back.
