Lt. Jonathan Lyman
Jonathan Lyman was born at Northampton in Massachusetts on 1 January 1684. He was the fifth son of Richard Lyman and Elizabeth Cowles. His father's family had been at Northampton since its first years, and his mother was a daughter of John Cowles of Hatfield, the next town up the Connecticut River.
In 1696, when Jonathan was twelve, his father moved the family south to Lebanon in Connecticut. Lebanon was then a new town in the east of the colony, still being laid out. An allotment of land there was deeded to his father, who divided it among his sons. Jonathan farmed his share at Lebanon for the rest of his life.
He married Lydia Loomis, a daughter of Deacon Joseph Loomis of Windsor and Hannah Marsh. The two families were already joined. His grandmother Hephzibah Ford, after his grandfather Richard Lyman died, married John Marsh of Hadley, and John Marsh was Lydia's grandfather. Lydia's sister Grace came to Lebanon too. In 1709 she married Capt. John Webster there as his second wife.
Their first child, a son Jonathan, was born on 19 September 1708 and died young. Lydia followed on 23 November 1709. Then came a second Jonathan in 1712, Sarah in 1713, Hannah in 1715, Joseph in 1718, the twins Jacob and Rachel on 4 May 1721, Zeriah in 1723, Elijah in 1727 and Anna in 1731. The second Jonathan was given the name of the boy who had died.
In 1727 his daughter Lydia, not yet eighteen, married Thomas Webster, a son of Capt. John Webster. Thomas's stepmother was Lydia's aunt Grace. His daughters Sarah and Hannah married William Hunt and Simeon Hunt. His son Joseph married Joanna Loomis, of his wife's family.
He held the rank of lieutenant, a commission in the town's militia company. He died at Lebanon on 11 August 1753, aged sixty nine. Lydia outlived him by more than twenty years.
