Lucinda A. Clark
Lucinda A. Clark was born on 9 April 1853, the date on her gravestone. Her children gave her birthplace to the census of 1900 as Massachusetts.
On 7 December 1868, at fifteen, she married Thomas J. Sellens in Kankakee County, Illinois. He was an English-born veteran of Company C of the 7th Illinois Infantry, ten years older. Their first three sons were born in Illinois, and by 1876 the family had moved to Russell County, Kansas. She bore twelve children between 1868 and 1895: Thomas W., Horace J., John R., Mary Lucinda, Charles C., Alvin Rodelphus, Susan, Benjamin, Sophia Ana, Warren Sherman, Josephine Ora and Walter Howard. Benjamin died in 1888, aged two.
In 1900 she and Thomas were farming in Lincoln Township with eleven of the children at home. Thomas died on 15 October 1901, when Walter, the youngest, was six. Lucinda applied for a widow's pension on his war service and was granted it as certificate 660,367.
In 1910 the census found her heading her own household in Fairfield Township, Russell County, with eight of her children: Sophia A., Horace J., John R., Walter, Josie O., Mary L., Susan J. and Warren S. She lived on as a widow for almost forty years and died on 8 July 1940, aged 87. She is buried beside Thomas at Cross Plains Cemetery near Russell, under a matching stone that reads MOTHER, LUCINDA A., APRIL 9, 1853, JULY 8, 1940.
Memorials name her parents as John W. Clark (1829-1885) and Mary Harte (1823-1903). Two of her sisters, Mary L. and Helen P. Clark, also married into the Sellens family.
