Warren Sherman Sellens was born on 14 September 1890 in Russell County, Kansas, in the wheat country west of Salina. In 1916 he married Laura E. Shell, a Kansas girl eight years younger, who was eighteen that year. Their first children were born in Barton County, at Hoisington, a railroad town on the Missouri Pacific north of Great Bend: Gertrude, Roy, Dorothy Irene on 8 July 1920, and Warren in July 1924.
The Kansas state census of 1925 found the family in Barton County with Gertrude, Roy, Warren and Dorthy at home. Richard was born at Hoisington that September. By 1930 they had moved east to Blue Township in Jackson County, Missouri, on the edge of Kansas City, where the census found Warren and Laura with Gertrude, Richard, Roy, Dorothy, Mary and Warren. Mary, the youngest, had been born since 1925.
The family came back to Kansas and settled in Franklin County, around Ottawa and Pomona. Laura died on 2 March 1954, aged 55. When their son Richard married at Great Falls Air Force Base in Montana in August 1953, he gave his father's name in full on the license as Warren Sherman Sellens and his mother's maiden name as Laura E. Schell. Warren outlived Laura by ten years and died on 24 August 1964, a few weeks short of 74. They share one gray granite stone at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona: SELLENS, Warren S. 1890-1964, Laura E. 1898-1954.
When Dorothy died at Ellinwood in 1980 her brothers Roy of Overbrook, Warren of Ottawa and Richard of Great Falls, Montana, and her sisters Gertrude Fields of Washburn, Missouri, and Mary Walston of Texas were all living. Warren junior, born at Hoisington in 1924, died in 1989 and is buried at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.
Warren was the eleventh of the twelve children of Thomas J. Sellens, an English-born veteran of Company C of the 7th Illinois Infantry, and Lucinda A. Clark. In 1900, at ten, he was living with them on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Russell County. His father died the next year, and in 1910 Warren, 19, was still at home with his widowed mother and seven of his brothers and sisters in Fairfield Township. The Kansas state census of 1915 found him at Hoisington, where he met Laura Shell.
