Luke Rockingham Abbey
Luke Rockingham Abbey was born on 11 July 1867 in Whiteside County, Illinois, by one account. His parents were John Abbey, from Ohio, and his wife Anna, from Pennsylvania. He was a child of three in Newton Township, Whiteside County, in 1870, and in June 1880 he was 12 and at school there, the eldest of six children, with sisters Lucy, May, Hannah, Sarah and Gertrude.
About 1897 he married Effie M. Phillips, from Missouri. Their first children were born in Missouri: John Henry about 1897 and Arline Elizabeth about 1899. By 1901 they were in Colorado, where Della Rosa was born that year and died as a baby, and where Estella Marie was born on 14 March 1903, Charles Francis in 1904 and Cecil Luke in 1905.
In April 1910 the family lived in Olathe Township, Johnson County, Kansas. Luke was 42, Effie 31, and they had been married thirteen years.
By January 1920 Effie was keeping house in Kansas City, Missouri, with the younger children, and was entered as a widow. Luke was alive. He went west to California, and by 1925 he had been living in Richmond "for some time," near his daughter Stella and her husband, Orval Belville.
He died at the hospital in Martinez at one in the morning on Tuesday, 24 March 1925, after an illness of two weeks. The Daily Gazette gave his age as 54 and said he was a native of Illinois. It named two daughters, "Ms. Orville Bellville of Richmond and Mrs. Adeline Oglesby of San Francisco." His funeral was held from the Brunscher Funeral Home on the Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. W. H. Hannaford officiating, and he was buried in Alhambra Cemetery at Martinez.
