Lydia Hallock
Lydia Hallock was the wife of Content C. Hallock of Richmond, Vermont, and the mother of his nine children. Her dates survive in the Hallock family Bible, which the Daughters of the American Revolution later typed into their volumes of Connecticut Bible records. The entry reads: "Lydia Hallock, his wife, b. May 11, 1772, d. Nov. 14, 1831."
Her maiden name is not in the Bible. Three later writers give it as Stevens or Stephens. A query in the Boston Transcript in 1926 called her "Lydia Stephens, born May 11, 1772". It said she married Content between 1790, when the census listed him as a bachelor, and 1800, when he had a wife and four children under ten. A query in a Mohawk Valley newspaper column of the 1940s called her Lydia Stevens and gave the Bible's birth and death to the day. American Ancestry, in 1887, wrote that Content married "Anne Stephens". That looks like her surname joined to her daughter's given name.
No record names her family, but the name fits the Hallocks' circle. Content's sister Elizabeth married a Stevens. In 1906 the farm his father had bought at Richmond was the home of "his relative, Rufus Stevens, Esq." And Lydia and Content named two sons Rufus. Stevens is probably right. It rests on those later writers alone.
She married Content about 1791, the year before her first child, when she was about nineteen. They lived at Richmond, in Chittenden County, Vermont, on the Winooski River. Her husband served the town as its collector of taxes, as guardian of orphaned children and as moderator of the town meeting.
Her children, in the order of the Bible, were Sophronia, born 19 May 1792; Rufus, 13 January 1794, who died young; Lydia S., 1796; Content C., 31 March 1798; a second Rufus, 8 March 1803; Anna, on Christmas Day 1805; Rosamond E., 5 September 1809, who probably died on 13 November 1811; George H., 8 September 1811; and a second Rosamond, 6 January 1815. Anna is Ann Hallock, who married Harvey Noulton in Lewis County, New York, in 1825. George, born in Vermont, married Cynthia Carter in 1837 and died at Lowville in 1856.
The family later went on to Lewis County, in northern New York, where Content died. Lydia died on 14 November 1831, aged fifty nine. The Bible gives the day and not the place. Her husband outlived her by sixteen years.
