Lydia Richmond
Lydia Richmond was born in Virginia about 1757. She married Richard Keele, who served as a frontier ranger in Henry County, Virginia, in 1776 and 1777 and later fought at King's Mountain. Their son John was born in 1777, and their son William in January 1781 in Washington County, in the Nolichucky country beyond the mountains. Their other children included Richard Richmond, Sarah, Jacob, Thomas and David.
The family settled in Middle Tennessee, in the Duck River country of Bedford County. On 22 September 1815 the Garrison Fork Baptist Church at Beech Grove "Received sister Lydia Keele by experience," which meant that she had told the congregation of her conversion and was taken in for baptism. Richard and their sons William and John were already active in the church, and William became its minister. In their last years they lived with their son David, just over the line in Rutherford County.
A great-granddaughter, Mrs. J. H. Wharton, wrote down that Richard Keele's "wife was Lydia Richmond, that is where the name Richmond came from." Her son Richard Richmond Keele carried it, and so did descendants for a century after her. She died in July 1849, the same month as Richard, and was buried beside him in the Keele Cemetery in Bedford County in an unmarked grave. Descendants set a stone for her in 2023.
