Born 1777, Henry County, Virginia
Died 1860
Father: Richard Keele

John Keele was born in 1777 in Henry County, in the Southside of Virginia. His memorial names his parents as Richard Keele, a frontier ranger of Henry County in 1776 and 1777 who later fought at King's Mountain, and Lydia Richmond, and his brothers and sisters as Rev. William M. Keele, Richard Richmond, Sarah Margaret, Jacob and Thomas Keele. The family name Richmond, his mother's, was carried by his grandson Richard Richmond Keele and by a great-grandson, Finis Richmond Keele.

He married Nancy Green, a North Carolina woman born about 1780. They settled in the Duck River country of Middle Tennessee, where the counties of Bedford, Rutherford, Coffee and Warren meet. Their son Philmore was born in 1798. Other children included John G., William, Permelia, James Willis, Green Richard and Lydia, who married Jesse Shelton.

The Keeles were Baptists of the Garrison Fork church in the Duck River Baptist Association. John, his parents, his wife and many of his children and grandchildren are named in its minutes, Philmore and his wife Margaret among them. His brother William was a minister of the church. On 27 November 1824, at Beech Grove, John Keele was ordained to preach.

In June 1860 the census taker found him at Beech Grove, in the third district of Coffee County, still giving his occupation as Baptist minister. He was entered as 88 and Nancy as 77, both born in Virginia. He died on 12 November 1860, aged about 83 by his memorial, in Coffee County, Tennessee, and was buried in the Keele Cemetery in Bedford County. Nancy died in March 1863 and was buried there too.
