Mabel Kendall
Mabel Kendall was born in England in 1605. She married William Reade, eighteen years older, and had three children in England: George in 1629, Ralph in 1630 and a daughter in 1633 who grew up as Abigail.
In July 1635 the family sailed from London in the Defence and reached Boston on 6 October. They lived at Dorchester, then from 1639 at Scituate. In 1644 her husband sent her back to Dorchester on horseback with a new baby, Israel, to be baptized in his church there. The family lived next at Muddy River, now Brookline, and from 1648 on a farm at Woburn. Three more daughters were born in America: Bethia, Sarah and Rebecca.
Her husband went back to England and died at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1656. His will left her £60. On 31 October 1656 administration of his estate was granted at London, under the seal of Oliver Cromwell, to "Maybel Reade, widow." She returned to Massachusetts and settled the estate.
On 21 November 1660 she married Henry Somers, or Summers, senior, of Woburn. The town clerk wrote "Mabel Reed and Henry Somers, Sen., Nov. 21, 1660." She outlived him. In October 1684 Henry Somers sued her son-in-law Francis Wyman, who was acting as her attorney, for a quarter's board of her. In her last years the court described her as "so weak and infirm as renders her uncapable to take care for herself."
She spent her last years in the house of her son George Reed. She died on 5 June 1690, aged eighty five. George brought her will into court that June.
