Abigail Reed
Abigail Reed was born in England about 1633, the third child of William Reade and Mabel Kendall. In July 1635 her parents sailed from London in the ship Defence, Capt. Edward Fostick master, with Abigail and her brothers George, about six, and Ralph, about five. They reached Boston on 6 October 1635. The Reed family history of 1861 says the little girl on that voyage was called Justice, "afterwards Abigail."
Her childhood moved with her father. The family settled first at Dorchester. In August 1639 her father sold out there and moved to Scituate. In 1644, when he was constable of Scituate, her mother rode on horseback to Dorchester with a baby brother, Israel, to have him baptized in her father's church. Next the family lived at Muddy River, now Brookline, on land her uncle Esdras had been granted by Boston. In 1648 her father bought a farm at Woburn from Nicholas Davis of Charlestown: fifty acres of upland, four acres of meadow before the door, four in Rockbrook and two in Brook Meadow, with the barns and fences. Three more children were born in America: Bethia, Sarah and Rebecca.
On 2 October 1650, aged about seventeen, she married Francis Wyman of Woburn as his second wife. He was a tanner on Wyman's Lane, about thirteen years older. They had twelve children over twenty seven years. The first, Judith, was born in September 1652 and lived three months. The last, another Judith, was born on 15 January 1679.
Her father went back to England and died at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1656. His will provided for "my three children that are married in Newengland," and she was one of them. Her mother came back to Woburn, married Henry Somers in 1660, and lived until 1690. In 1684 Abigail's husband acted for her mother in court.
When Abigail died is not known.
