Mable Annett O'Brien
Mable Annett O'Brien was born in Kansas in 1881, the youngest daughter of Samuel O'Brien and Martha Virginia Furr, who had come out from Illinois in July 1879 and settled at Dorrance, a small station on the railroad in the eastern end of Russell County. Her older brother Frank and sisters Belle, Ida and Alice had all been born in Illinois; her brother Thomas was born at Dorrance in 1883. Her mother died in December 1899, when Mable was eighteen, and her brother Frank four months later.
On 18 August 1901, at twenty, she married Arnest Frank Aimes, a Russell County contractor's son, at Dorrance. That same year her father left Dorrance for the country around Lucas, in the north of the county. Six children followed over 21 years: Laverne in 1903, Alice in 1907, Dwight in 1909, Ariel about 1914, Virgil in 1918 and Duane about 1924. In 1915 the family was living at Lucas, and her father spent the last months of his life in their house. He died there on 19 November 1915, and his obituary named her as "his daughter, Mrs. Ames of Lucas."
The family moved with Arnest's building work, to Saline County, and by 1930 to Atchison, where the census found her at 48 with five children at home. In 1932 they settled at Farmington, New Mexico. She died there in December 1963, after 62 years of marriage, and Arnest followed her four months later. They lie together in Memory Gardens of Farmington under one stone cut as an open book.
