Dwight Leander Aimes
Dwight Leander Aimes was born on 25 January 1909 at Russell, Kansas, the third child of Arnest Frank Aimes, a Russell County boy who became a building contractor, and Mable Annett O'Brien, who had married at Dorrance in 1901. His grandfather Clement Aimes, a New York cavalryman of the Civil War, had come to Russell County as a cattle driver in 1871 and was still living in the town when Dwight was born. His brother Laverne was six years older and his sister Alice two; Ariel, Virgil and Duane came after him.
The family moved about with his father's work. In 1915 they were at Lucas in Russell County, in 1925 in Saline County, and in 1930 at Atchison on the Missouri River, where the census found Dwight, 21, still at home with his parents and with Alice, Ariel, Virgil and Dwaine. He married Gladys M. Hopkins, two years younger. Their son Robert was born in February 1927, when Dwight was eighteen; Dean followed, then Donna Lea on 18 July 1935 and Joyce Elaine in 1940. In 1940 they were at Farlington in Sherman Township, Crawford County, in the south eastern corner of the state. When he registered for the draft in October 1940 he gave his full name as Dwight Leander Ames. His parents went to Farmington, New Mexico in 1932, and his brothers scattered to Albuquerque and Sacramento, but Dwight settled at Mulvane, south of Wichita, where Gladys waited tables at the D & L Cafe for years.
His father died at Farmington in April 1964, and the Farmington paper listed Dwight Aimes of Mulvane, Kansas among the six surviving children. Dwight died on 19 April 1971, aged 62, and was buried at Mulvane Cemetery under a stone he shares with Gladys, who outlived him by 31 years.
