Born 1928, McCurtain, Haskell County, Oklahoma
Died 1988
Father: LeRoy L. Gragg
Mother: Grace Florence Hulvey

Manuel June Gragg was born in June 1928 at McCurtain, a coal-mining town in Haskell County, Oklahoma. His family gives the date as 2 June; his draft registration gives 20 June. He was the son of LeRoy L. Gragg, a coal miner, and Grace Florence Hulvey. His family says he was named for his uncle Manuel, his father's younger brother.

He was one of eleven children. Among them were Leroy Jr., Virginia Lucille, Billie Jack, who died as a baby in 1929, Rudolph Howard, Jimmie Charles and Daymond Therrel, later a petty officer in the Navy. His mother died at McCurtain in November 1948, when Manuel was twenty.

On 24 June 1946, soon after he turned eighteen, Manuel registered for the draft at McCurtain.

He went west. In November 1954, at Reno, Nevada, he married Betty Jenny Wallner, a divorced mother of two from Fallon. They had seven children in nine years. Michael was born in Sonoma County in 1955, Robert in Siskiyou County in 1956 and Gary in Los Angeles County in 1958. Manuel worked as a general laborer, in the timber industry and as a dock hand in warehouses, and the family moved with the work.

About 1959 the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where many of the Graggs then lived and where his father died in 1969. Ronald was born there in 1959 and Karel in 1960. They later lived at Colorado Springs. Dolores Kristine was born in Shasta County, California, in 1963.

Betty divorced him and took the children home to Redding. An account written by one of their sons says Manuel was in jail at the birth of his oldest child, that he was violent toward his wife and children, and that he did not spend his wages on them.

Manuel June Gragg died at Redding, Shasta County, California, on 4 March 1988. He was 59. He was cremated.
