Grace Florence Hulvey
Grace Florence Hulvey was born on 6 April 1904 at Gowen, a coal town of the Choctaw Nation in what became Latimer County, Oklahoma. Her parents were Lewis Howard Hulvey, who had come west from Fort Seybert, West Virginia, and Elizabeth Riller Jones, the daughter of an Alabama coal miner. Her older brother Charles Rock was born in 1899 and her sister Sarah Ethel in 1902.
On 17 July 1923 Grace married LeRoy L. Gragg, a young coal miner, in Oklahoma. Over the next twenty-five years she bore eleven children: Geraldine, Virginia Lucille, LeRoy Jr., Manuel June (1928), Billie Jack, who died as a baby in 1929, Rudolph Howard, Robert Jack, James Charles, Raymond and Daymond Therrel, both born in 1942, and Lora Lou (1948).
The family followed the mines. In 1930 they lived at Dow, a coal camp in Pittsburg County, and in 1940 at Machire in Haskell County.
Grace died at McCurtain, Haskell County, on 21 November 1948, months after the birth of Lora Lou. She was 44. She is buried in the Miners Cemetery at McCurtain, where LeRoy was brought back to lie beside her in 1969.
