Margaret Bieker
Margaret Bieker was born about 1799 in Obermonjou on the Volga; her maiden name is not known, though one account gives it as Hammerschmidt. She married Johannes Bieker and was the mother of five sons, Heinrich, Johann Adam, Nikolaus, Johannes and Joseph. The 1834 and 1857 censuses of the colony list her in his household. Widowed before 1876, she followed four of her sons to America: on 6 September 1876 she landed at New York on the steamship Gellert with her son Adam, 49, his wife Cathar, 45, and their children Cathar, 16, and Franz, 14, the Hamburg list giving her age as 72 and their home as Neu Obermonjou. The Schoenchen church history lists her, under the name Catherine Bieker, widow, among the founding families of that Ellis County colony. She died about 1880, before the federal census, and probably lies among the unmarked iron crosses in the first rows of St. Anthony Cemetery at Schoenchen.
