Margaret Cuppy

Died 1816

Margaret Cuppy was the wife of John Cuppy, who brought the family from Morristown, New Jersey, to Mill Creek near Romney in Hampshire County, Virginia, about 1762. Her son John, born near Morristown on 11 March 1761, was a baby when they made the move.

Her own family name is uncertain. In 1859 her son John, then ninety eight, talked about his family to two men. A grandnephew, John Warral Cuppy, wrote in his diary that his mother was Margaret Parker. The historian Lyman Draper, who was collecting the memories of the old frontier, wrote that she was Margaret Devore, a native of New Jersey. Devore was also the name of the son's own first wife, Elizabeth, so one of the two may have been confused. The family's compiler in the 1940s took Parker, noting that a Benjamin Parker had sold her husband his first land on Mill Creek in 1766.

She joined her husband in selling both Mill Creek farms in April 1794, and went with him to the Ohio River in Brooke County, near the present New Cumberland. In his will of August 1801 he named her first among his executors and left her all his personal estate. She outlived him by fourteen years and died near New Cumberland in 1816.

Her son John administered her estate. Its inventory was taken on 3 January 1817 by John Pettinger, William Hewitt, Andrew McCowen and Hugh Pugh, and the sale was held three days later. Robert Mills, John Cuppy, Aaron and Samuel Bartholomew, Moses Pugh and John Thomas were among the buyers. The proceeds barely covered the funeral and the costs, so nothing was left to divide among her children.
