Margaret E. Loyd
Margaret E. Loyd was born on 4 March 1840 in Jackson County, Alabama, in the Tennessee valley country of the state's north-east corner. Her parents, Thomas Loyd and Sarah Wann, were both born in Wayne County, Kentucky, and had married in Jackson County in 1834. The family moved on to Arkansas and settled at Magazine, under the mountain of that name on the Logan and Yell county line, where her brothers James Alexander, Jordan, George Green, John Franklin, William Green, Alfred and Burl Clinton Loyd and her sisters Rachel and Rhoda also grew up.
On Christmas Day 1867, in Scott County, Arkansas, she married Eli Delworth Hooper, a widower of thirty with twin baby sons. She raised the twins and bore nine children of her own: Patsy, Sallie, Mary Orinda, Nellie, Thomas, Nancy, Daniel Webster in April 1880, and Henry. The 1880 census found her at forty keeping house for a dry goods merchant in Revilee Township with ten children under the roof and a boarder.
Her parents died at Magazine in 1883 and 1884. Margaret died on 27 December 1894, aged 54, when her youngest sons were still boys, and was buried in the family graveyard on the Hooper farm at Blue Mountain under a stone that still reads Margaret E. Hooper, born Mar. 4, 1840, died Dec. 27, 1894.
