Daniel Webster Hooper
Daniel Webster Hooper was born on 2 April 1880 at Magazine, under Mount Magazine in Logan County, Arkansas, the youngest but one of the twelve children of Eli Delworth Hooper and Margaret E. Loyd. He was one month old when the census taker came on 24 June 1880 and wrote him down as Daniel W., son, born in April, at the foot of a household of ten children, a dry goods merchant father and a mother keeping house. His mother died two days after Christmas 1894, when he was fourteen. His father married again, and in 1900 Daniel, twenty, was still at home in Revilee Township with his father, his stepmother and his younger brother Henry.
He married at Blue Mountain. On 22 November 1902 he gave the county clerk at Paris a hundred-dollar bond, with C. P. Trimm as his security, for a licence to marry Miss Verna Riblin, eighteen, the daughter of Sam Ribelin who farmed in Petit Jean Township. J. N. Pennington, a minister of the gospel, married them on 23 November 1902. Their first child, Roy Basil, was born in 1905, and Lucille in 1909.
They went to Oklahoma, to the new farm country around Elgin in Comanche County, opened to settlers by the lottery of 1901. Sybil Verna was born there in 1915 and Don W. on 8 August 1919, and there were two more daughters, Ariel and Elizabeth. On 12 September 1918 Daniel registered for the draft at Lawton: route 2, Elgin, aged 38, farming for himself, nearest relative Verna Hooper; the registrar wrote him down as tall and of medium build, with blue eyes and black hair.
Verna died in 1926, aged about 42, leaving Don six years old. Daniel did not marry again, as far as the record shows. He lived another forty years, long enough to see his son Don marry Lois Robinson in 1945 and farm west of Fletcher. He died at Fletcher on 16 November 1966, aged 86, and was buried beside Verna in the Elgin Memorial Cemetery, under a matching grey stone cut FATHER.
