Margaret Irwin

Margaret Irwin was born on 21 September 1771, according to a family genealogy of 1959. The 1850 census gives her birthplace as North Carolina. She was a daughter of Edward Irwin of Long Creek, in the Hopewell congregation of Mecklenburg County, and almost certainly of his wife Margery. Her mother died in October 1788, when Margaret was seventeen. Her father died two years later.

Her father's will of April 1790 names her: "Margaret Erwin my beloved daughter." It left her a bed, her mother's saddle, a spinning wheel, a cow and a chest, with a cloak to be bought for her that summer. The first witness was John Canon, her father's neighbor since 1769.

About 1791 she married John Canon's son Job. Three years later her younger sister Sarah chose Job as her guardian in the county court. Margaret and Job had at least seven children who grew up. She named her youngest son Edward Irwin Cannon, after her father.

Job died in June 1842. His will left her a widow's dower in the plantation, the service of an enslaved woman named Matty and of David McGoard, money to buy another woman to work for her, and the new family Bible. He charged their son Edward with seeing "that his mother is well taken care of in sickness and health." Edward died in 1844.

By 1850 she was living in Perry County, Alabama, with her son Malcolm. The census lists her in his household as Margaret Cannon, aged about eighty-one. She died there on 15 October 1860, at eighty-nine, and was buried in Providence Cemetery near Marion.
