Malcolm Demus Canon
Malcolm Demus Canon was born on 4 May 1803 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the county around Charlotte. In 1817, at fourteen, he moved to St. Clair County, Alabama.
On 21 June 1827 he married Babby Benson. She died in 1834. On 8 September 1836 he married Nancy Blackburn Boyd in Perry County, Alabama, and that year he settled on Bush Creek in Perry County. Their daughter Rosanna Emiline was born near Morgan Springs in 1840.
He trained as a doctor and gave it up. The 1959 family genealogy says he "started out as a doctor but quit because he said doctors were frauds." He became a planter instead. He owned a large farm, enslaved people, a cotton gin and a blacksmith shop. The 1850 census found him in Perry County with Nancy and Rosanna; it writes him as "Malcom D Cannon."
By 1875 he also owned a farm in Tyler County, Texas. That year his daughter Rosanna and her husband John Hopkins took their family there by wagon.
He died in Perry County on 29 July 1885, aged 82. He was buried in Providence Cemetery near Marion, Alabama. That year his heirs signed an agreement dividing his estate, recorded in the Perry County deed books. His daughter's Texas death certificate, in 1917, names him "Malcom Dennis Canon."
