Margaret Porter
Margaret Porter was born in North Carolina on 25 June 1819. A family tree on her grave memorial gives her parents as Lawrence Porter and Elizabeth Parks, and her oldest known son carried her father's given name: Lawrence Lawful Canupp, born in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1846.
She married Caleb Canup, a North Carolina farmer three years younger than she was. By 1860 they had moved west to Johnson County, Illinois, where a younger son, John Wesley, was born in 1857.
In December 1863 Caleb enlisted in the Union army at Grays Mill. He was mustered in at Camp Butler, near Springfield, in February 1864, and died at home on 4 April 1864. Margaret was forty-four and a widow. She lived another twenty-six years, died on 31 December 1890, aged seventy-one, and was buried in West Eden Cemetery near Caleb. When her son John Wesley died in 1932, his death record named his mother as Margaret Porter.
