Lawrence Lawful Canupp
Lawrence Lawful Canupp was born in 1846. His grave memorial gives his birthplace as Rowan County, North Carolina, where the Canupp name was old. He came west to Johnson County in southern Illinois, and there he married Elizabeth Jane Davis, an Illinois girl three years younger.
They had at least eight children between 1874 and 1890: James W., who died at about eleven in 1885, William Caleb, Margaret C., Rosetta, Alice I., Charles Samuel, John Calvin and the youngest, Otis Zebidac. Lawrence died in Johnson County on 18 September 1901, when Otis was eleven. He is buried in West Eden Cemetery under a double stone with his wife, who outlived him by twenty-five years.
Their son Otis named them on his 1927 marriage licence as Laurence L. Canupp and Jane Davis, and his 1930 death certificate gives them as Lawrence Canupp and Jane Davis.
Lawrence was seventeen when his father, Caleb Canup, a North Carolina-born farmer, enlisted in the Union army at Grays Mill in December 1863. Caleb was mustered in at Camp Butler, near Springfield, in February 1864 and died at home on 4 April 1864. Lawrence's mother Margaret Porter lived as a widow until 1890, and both parents are buried in West Eden Cemetery, where Lawrence was laid beside them in 1901.
