Margaret Snider
Margaret was the wife of Jacob Snider, a farmer on Back Creek in Berkeley County, Virginia. Her maiden name is not known. A lineage form of the Daughters of the American Revolution puts her birth about 1740 and her marriage about 1760.
On 17 May 1774 she and Jacob acknowledged a deed together in the Berkeley County court. A wife joined in a sale this way to give up her dower, her right as a widow to a third of her husband's land.
Jacob made his will in November 1787. He left her the home plantation for as long as she remained his widow. If she married again, she was to leave with a settlement and without the children. Jacob had died by June 1790.
By 1795 she was living in Providence Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, where several of her children had settled. That year's tax list names her "Margret Snider Widow," between John Hendricks and Simon Stucky, with Jacob, Joseph and David Snider further down. Simon Stuckey had married her daughter Margaret. John Hendricks had very probably married her daughter Elizabeth. On 6 September 1796 she sold John Hendricks land in Croyle's Valley, now Snake Spring Valley. When she died is not known.
