Mariah Greenwell
Mariah Greenwell was born in Kentucky about 1799. She appears beside Benedict Greenwell in the censuses of 1850 and 1860, written Maria, keeping a Meade County farmhouse full of children and, in 1860, Benedict's newly married daughter Matilda and her husband John Henry Brown. When Benedict conveyed his land to their sons she joined in the deeds: in 1867 and again in 1871 the clerk certified that Mariah Greenwell, 'being examined separately and apart from her husband as the law directs,' acknowledged the conveyances as her own act, and she signed each with her mark.
The October 1871 acknowledgment is the last record of her alive. Benedict's 1875 will makes no provision for a wife, which fits the account compiled at the family's memorials that she died in 1873. That account also gives her a maiden name, Gough, a family thick in Meade County's Catholic settlements and in its courthouse, where a Gough was clerk for decades. No record read proves the name.
She is taken to be the mother of Andrew J. Greenwell, born 1821: she was Benedict's wife in every record that names one, her age fits, and the compiled account says so plainly. No document read states it directly.
