Andrew J. Greenwell
Andrew J. Greenwell was born 4 February 1821 in what became Meade County, Kentucky, a son of Benedict Greenwell, a Maryland-born farmer of the Catholic families that settled the Ohio River counties. On 30 April 1844, by the account compiled at his grave, he married Martha Jane Mills, and the county's deed books bear the account out: an 1857 conveyance carries Andrew J. Greenwell and Martha J. Greenwell his wife signing alongside James J. Mills and Robert Mills.
He farmed and kept store in the Concordia precinct, the river neighborhood around Payneville and Andyville. His father deeded him land for four hundred dollars in 1867. In time the business became A. J. Greenwell and Son, with his son Thomas Jefferson as partner: at his death the firm's assets ran to a store house and lot, a 140 acre tract, and the fifty acre homestead. Nine children were born to him and Martha between 1846 and 1863, and three of them married other Greenwells.
He died of typhoid fever on 5 April 1894, aged seventy three, and was buried at St. Mary Magdalen of Pazzi, the Catholic church at Payneville. His estate took the Meade Circuit Court years to unwind. The court's orders, cancelling the notes his children owed the store and equalizing their shares, reach every one of them by name, including Julia C. Brown, by then a farmer's wife across the Mississippi in the Missouri bootheel.
