Mariah L. Ames
Mariah L. Ames was born in New York City about 1822. She married an Ames of Orange County, New York, and bore him twelve children over some twenty years. The eldest son at home in 1865, Clement, had been born on 21 August 1842 at Goshen, the county seat; the youngest, a daughter named Mariah for her, was born about 1863.
By June 1865 she was a widow. The state census taker came to her house in the town of Hamptonburgh, next to Goshen, on 9 June 1865. He found a frame house worth 2,500 dollars, and she was listed as its owner. In it were Mariah L. Ames, 43, widowed, born in New York City, the mother of twelve children; her son Clement F., 21, a farmer; Amzi, 16; William F., 14; Maggie B., 11; Edward W., 9; and Mariah L., 2; with Norah Griffin, 18, an Irish servant. The census's schedule of men then in the army records Clement as serving in a New Hampshire regiment, a sergeant promoted first lieutenant.
Clement came home that summer and went west to Kansas in 1871. Nothing later of Mariah has been found.
