Clement Francis Sheveric Aimes
Clement Francis Sheveric Aimes was born on 21 August 1842 at Goshen in Orange County, New York. His mother was Mariah L. Ames, a New York City-born woman who bore twelve children; by 1865 she was a widow owning a frame house in the neighboring town of Hamptonburgh. He went to war at nineteen: on 1 December 1861 he enlisted in Company D of the 82nd New York Volunteers. On 6 October 1863 he enlisted again, as a paid substitute for a drafted New Hampshire man, in Company C of the 7th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, credited to the city of Manchester. He rose from private to corporal and was commissioned first lieutenant on 22 December 1864. He was mustered out on 20 July 1865, and his stone at Russell calls him 1 Lieut. Co. C.
In 1871 he came out to Russell County, Kansas, in the first year of the town's settlement, and was employed as a cattle driver over western Kansas. On 27 June 1875 at Russell he married Calista Hadlock, called Kitt, a Vermont-born girl of 23 whose parents had come from Wisconsin in the same year as he. Six children were born to them, five of whom lived: Henry in 1875, Arnest Frank in 1878, Louise Helen in 1882 and Anna Dorothy in 1888 among them. Calista fell ill about 1898 and was bedfast nineteen months; she died on 2 August 1900 with her husband and five children at her bedside. He married again, Harriet Louise Ropp, called Hattie, who died in 1939. His eldest son Henry died at Herington in 1908.
He lived on in Russell to a great age. On Memorial Day 1936 the city dedicated the park beside his house as Aimes Park. He died on the night of Wednesday 28 October 1936, aged 94, Russell's last surviving Civil War veteran, and the Associated Press carried the notice across the country. He is buried in Russell City Cemetery under a government marker.
