Marie Salome Forst
Marie Salome Forst was born at Kutzenhausen, a village of northern Alsace in the Bas-Rhin, in 1802, by her gravestone. About 1828 she married Pierre George Christilles of Lampertsloch, the next village, and her children were born there over the next sixteen years.
In December 1844, at forty-two, she sailed from Antwerp on the Probus with Henri Castro's ninth shipload of colonists, listed as "Salomé sa femme" with her husband and six children, the youngest a girl of nine months named for her. The family reached New Orleans in January 1845 and went on to Castroville on the Medina River. The baby did not live.
Her husband died in October 1856, and she lived on as a widow for thirty-six years among her married children in the Castroville families. Her daughter Barbe married twice and died in 1869, leaving six children.
Marie Salome died on 27 July 1892, at about ninety, at San Antonio by a compiled family record, and was buried the next day in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. Her old stone is in German: "Maria S. Christilles, geb. 1802, gest. Juli 27 1892."
