Barbara Christilles
Barbara Christilles was born on 12 August 1833 at Lampertsloch, a village of northern Alsace in the Bas-Rhin. Her memorial names her parents as Pierre George Christilles (1805 to 1856) and Mary Salome Forst (1802 to 1892), and her brothers and sisters as Katherine (Braden), George, Joseph Francois and Salome, who died as a baby in 1844 in Texas. The family were among the colonists Henri Castro brought from Alsace to the Medina River. In December 1844 they sailed from Antwerp on the Probus, his ninth ship, and the list shows "Barbe," 11, among the six children of Pierre and Salomé Christilis, with a grandfather of seventy-five, Joseph, listed just above them. They landed at New Orleans in January 1845.
In 1852 she married Blaise Meyer Jr. Their daughter Katherina was born in 1855, and Blaise died the same year, at 25. In 1857 Barbara married Frederick Haass, who had come from Dürkheim with his parents five years before. They had five children: George Louis, Mary Anna, Frederick Carl, Sybilla and Henry F.
Barbara died on 10 December 1869, at 36, when her youngest was three. She was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. Her daughter Katherina grew up to marry Henry Vonflie, and two generations later a Haass granddaughter boarded with "Kate and Henry Vonflie" in town so she could go to school.
