Marit Johnsdatter
Marit Johnsdatter was born in Norway in 1817, by her memorial. Johnsdatter is a patronymic, John's daughter, and not a family name; she kept it all her life and never took her husband's.
By the family memorials she married Anders Ellingsen of Aspeholt, in Hedalen, in 1841. He was a widower of twenty-five. His first wife, Anne Torkelsdatter, had died in childbed the October before, leaving two daughters, Ingri, not yet two, and the newborn Anne. Marit raised them. Her own first child, Elling, was born on 6 January 1842.
The Sør-Aurdal parish register names her as "Marith", wife of Anders Ellensen, gårdmann at Aspeholt, at the baptism of their son John on 22 June 1845. She is named again as mother at the baptisms of Anne in 1849, Marit in 1854, Kari in 1856 and Sigrid, baptised at home in July 1860.
In 1861 the family left Hedalen together. The parish list of those moving away enters her as Marit Johnsdtr, beside her husband, her two stepdaughters and five of her own children. They settled in Iowa County, Wisconsin. She died near Highland in 1892 and is buried at Otter Creek Cemetery without a marker.
