Elling Anderson was born in Hedalen, a side valley of Sør-Aurdal parish in Valdres, Norway. His stone at Otter Creek Cemetery, near Highland in Iowa County, Wisconsin, reads: "AT REST / ELLEN ANDERSON / DIED NOV. 4, 1897 / AGED 55 YRS. 10 MOS. 26 DAS. / BORN IN HEDALEN NORWAY". The age gives a birth about 9 December 1841. His memorial gives 6 January 1841.

His parents, by their memorials, were Anders Ellingsen Aspeholt (1815-1900) and Marit Johnsdatter (1817-1892), who married in 1841. The Sør-Aurdal parish register shows them at the farm Aspeholt in Hedalen. On 22 June 1845 it records the baptism of John, son of Anders Ellensen, gårdmann at Aspeholt, and Marith. A gårdmann held his own farm. Elling carried his grandfather's name, and Anderson was his father's name made into a surname. His own baptism, late in 1841, is not among the indexed entries. His parents also came to Iowa County, and are buried at Otter Creek without stones.

Dodgeville was the capital of Wisconsin's lead district. After the Cornish and Welsh miners came Norwegians who took up farms around the town, and in 1880 Norway was the second commonest foreign birthplace in Dodgeville. By his memorial Elling married Bertha Stoa, born Birte Andersdatter, in 1870. She already had sons named Ladd, the eldest born in 1864. Their own children were Alfred, born at Dodgeville on 9 July 1871, who grew up as Alfred C. Ellison; Amelia, born at Highland on 8 September 1875; Emma, born in 1880; Elmer; George M., born in 1884; and Clara, born in July 1890.

In January 1897 Amelia married John Watson Peart. Elling died ten months later, on 4 November 1897, at fifty-five. That is why the 1900 census finds Bertha at the head of her own household in Dodgeville town with the four youngest children. She lived until 1936, and they share a small granite stone at Otter Creek: "ANDERSON / ELLEN 1841-1897 / BERTHA 1842-1936".
