Marshall Mullins
Marshall Mullins was born about 1826 in Kentucky, by the census of 1850. His daughter's death certificate, filled in long afterwards, gives his birthplace as Virginia.
In 1850 the census taker found him in Russell County, Virginia, as Marshal Mullins, 24. With him were his wife Eliza, 23, born in Virginia, and two small daughters, Nancy, 2, and Sally, 1. Russell County then ran north and west over the mountains to the Kentucky line, across country that was cut off later into Wise County in 1856 and Dickenson County in 1880.
Eliza was a Mullins by birth as well as by marriage. When their daughter Sallie died in 1927, her death certificate named her father as Marshall Mullins and gave her mother's maiden name as Mullins.
Sally grew up as Sarah, called Sallie. On 29 September 1868, at nineteen, she married Harvey Kelly, a Union veteran from Pike County, Kentucky, in Wise County. The clerk wrote her birthplace as Russell County and her parents as M. and E. Mullins. She and Harvey raised thirteen children on Brush Creek, near Freeling and Clintwood.
In February 1904 the Richmond Times-Dispatch printed a piece about ten people past eighty who were living near Freeling, in Dickenson County, with a picture of each. One of them was Harvey's father, William Kelly. Another was a Marshall Mullins, and the paper said of him: "Marshall Mullins, eighty-three, was reared in this section; has been a widower only a few months, his wife, whose age was near his own, having died last summer." He is very probably the same man. The census age and the age he gave in 1904 differ by five years, which is common in the ages of old people. If so, Eliza died in the summer of 1903. A Clintwood paper looked back on the same ten people in 1939 and said that every one of them had died by 1924.
