Martha A. Cannon
Martha A. Cannon was the wife of John Canon. Her gravestone at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, in Mecklenburg County, reads "In memory of MARTHA A. CANNON who died October 8, 1798; aged 64 years." She was born about 1734.
Her husband's will of 1786 called her "my beloved wife Martha" and made her an executor with their sons John and Job. Dower was a widow's legal right to a third of her husband's land for life, and a will could offer her something else in its place. In place of her dower, John left her a mare called Bonny, her choice of three cows, all the sheep and the whole of the household and kitchen furniture. She also had "the privilege of my Mansion House" for herself and the children living with her, for her life or widowhood. That first page of the will is known only from a compiled transcription of the 1960s. Their son Job, who took the plantation, was to maintain the family. The will made her a trustee of a second tract called Todds place, and recommended their youngest daughter, Martha, "to her mother's care."
She was widowed in January 1794 and died four and a half years later. Her maiden name is not known. Online trees call her Martha Alexander; the Daughters of the American Revolution record her surname as unknown.
