Job Canon

Job Canon was born on 5 August 1766, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, according to family letters used in a genealogy of 1959. His parents were John and Martha Canon. The family moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and settled near Hopewell Presbyterian Church, north of Charlotte.

When he was twenty his father made his will and left Job the home plantation, on condition that he keep the family on it. He was named an executor with his mother and his brother John. His father died in January 1794.

About 1791 he married Margaret Irwin, a daughter of Edward Irwin of the same congregation, who had died in 1790. In April 1794 Margaret's young sister Sarah came into the county court and chose Job as her guardian.

He became a trusted man in the county. The court appointed him to guard orphans, including Charity Garrison in 1829 and the Giles children in 1839. He served on juries and on a jury to lay out the Beatty's Ford road in 1828. With James Sample he executed the will of John Carson, proved in 1819. Later he executed the will of Sarah McEntyre. He held enslaved people, and in 1824 he released a woman named Timpy by a deed recorded in Rowan County.

His son Malcolm settled in Alabama and prospered there. Job signed his own will on 10 May 1842. He died on 21 June 1842 and was buried at Hopewell. His son Edward executed the will but died in 1844, and Batte Irwin finished the estate. By 1850 his widow Margaret was living with Malcolm in Alabama. She died there in 1860.
