Martha Charlotta Davis
Martha Charlotta Davis, called Mattie, was born in June 1856 in Union Parish, in the piney hills of north Louisiana. By the family's account her father was Thomas L. Davis, who married Martha Emeline Faires there on 12 January 1854, was captured at Vicksburg in July 1863 and died a month later in Union Parish; her sister Nancy Caroline was born in 1862. Her mother married Richard Mosley Gilbert about 1865 and the Gilberts moved to Magazine in Logan County, Arkansas, where three more children were born.
About 1877 Mattie married Samuel Alexander Ribelin, a North Carolinian nine years older, and they farmed in Petit Jean Township beside her mother's family. The 1900 census entered her as Mattie C., 43, born June 1856 in Louisiana to Alabama-born parents, mother of seven children with six living; the next household on the page was her widowed mother Emma Gilbert, 65, with Mattie's half-brother Richard and half-sister Permelia Darby. Her own children at home were Baxter, Mittie, Vournie, Sallie and Ruth.
Her daughter Verna married D. W. Hooper in 1902 and died in Oklahoma in 1926. Mattie's husband died in April 1924. She died at Little Rock on 17 October 1927, aged 71, and was buried beside Sam in the Blue Mountain Cemetery under the half of their stone cut MOTHER, Mattie C. Ribelin, 1856 to 1927.
