Verna Ella Ribelin
Verna Ella Ribelin was born in July 1884 in Petit Jean Township, Logan County, Arkansas, the third of the children of Samuel Alexander Ribelin, a North Carolina farmer, and Martha Charlotta Davis, called Mattie, from Union Parish, Louisiana. The census taker of 1900 wrote her name Vournie, fifteen, at school four months of the year, between her sister Mittie and her sister Sallie; the household also had her brother Baxter, a farm labourer of nineteen, and the baby Ruth.
On 23 November 1902, aged eighteen, she married D. W. Hooper of Blue Mountain, the son of the Magazine dry goods merchant Eli D. Hooper, under a licence the clerk wrote out for Verna Riblin. Her children were Roy Basil, born 1905, Lucille, 1909, Sybil Verna, 1915, Don W., born at Elgin, Oklahoma, on 8 August 1919, and two more daughters, Ariel and Elizabeth. The family had moved to the Elgin country of Comanche County by 1915, and in 1918 her husband named her as his nearest relative on his draft card at route 2, Elgin.
She died in 1926 in Comanche County, aged about 42, and was buried in the Elgin Memorial Cemetery under a small grey stone cut MOTHER. Her youngest son was six. Her parents outlived her by very little: her father had died in 1924 and her mother died at Little Rock in October 1927.
