Martha Dorcas Collins was born on 7 June 1864 in Union County, in the mountains of north Georgia, while the Civil War was still being fought. Her father was William Jasper Collins, born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1829, who had married Frances J. Freeman in Paulding County, Georgia, in 1852. Martha's middle name was her grandmother's: Dorcas Reese Alexander Collins. Her brothers and sisters included Julius William Monroe, Sarah, Frances, James Eppy, Lenorah Frances "Norah" and William Marcus Collins.

The Collins family moved west. Her father spent his last years at Springtown, in Benton County, Arkansas, where a local paper called him "an old and highly respected citizen" when he died in 1909 and noted that his funeral was held by the Masons.

Martha married Joseph Albert Richardson, a Texan. They had eight children between 1889 and 1905, among them Simon Eppley "Sim" Richardson, whose middle name very probably came from her brother James Eppy Collins. The family lived in Indian Territory before statehood and later around Hitchita and Henryetta in eastern Oklahoma.

Albert died in 1931. Martha lived another twenty-four years and outlived six of her children. She died at Henryetta on 25 September 1955, at ninety-one, and was buried beside Albert in the Hitchita-Lackey Cemetery.
