Simon Eppley Richardson, called Sim, was born on 3 April 1895 in what is now Atoka County, Oklahoma. In 1895 Atoka was part of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory, twelve years before Oklahoma became a state. He was the son of Joseph Albert Richardson, a Texan born in 1858, and Martha Dorcas Collins, who was born in Union County, Georgia, in 1864. Sim was one of eight children: William Albert "Allie", Beulah, Sim, Charles M., Jasper Marcus "Mark", Clyde Herman, Guy Russell and Edith Ethel. His unusual middle name very probably came from his mother's brother, James Eppy Collins.

In the First World War Sim served as a private in the 162nd Depot Brigade. The depot brigades received new draftees, drilled them and sent them on as replacements to the fighting divisions, and the 162nd was based at Camp Pike, outside Little Rock, Arkansas.

Sim married Celia Ann Pippin, a Texas girl from Whitewright in Fannin County whose family had moved to Okmulgee County. They made their home at Henryetta. Their children were Harry Kenneth Richardson, born on 31 October 1920; Harold Murray Richardson, born on 15 December 1924, who carried his mother's father's middle name; and Johnnie Rhea Richardson, called Penne, born on 12 November 1927.

On 25 September 1945 his eldest son Harry, home from the war, married Ruby Jackson at Henryetta. Sim died there a month later, on 26 October 1945, at fifty. He was buried in West Lawn Cemetery, under a white marble government stone that reads "Sim Eppley Richardson, Oklahoma, Pvt., 162 Depot Brig., April 3, 1895, October 26, 1945." Celia married again in 1947 and died in 1955.
