Martha Jane Mills
Martha Jane Mills was born on 23 September 1823 at Concordia, in the Ohio River country of Kentucky, on ground that had lain in Hardin or Breckinridge until Meade County was struck off that December. Her parents were James Mills and Anna Greenwell, both born in Maryland, of the Catholic families that had come west into Kentucky in the generation after the Revolution. Her father died intestate before December 1838, when she was fifteen, and her mother came into the county court and took the administration herself on a bond of thirty two hundred dollars.
On 30 April 1844 she married Andrew J. Greenwell, and over the next twenty years bore him nine children, from Josephine in 1846 to Thomas Jefferson in 1863. Her father's land stayed undivided until the Meade Circuit Court ordered it sold in 1857, and the commissioner's deeds of that year and of 1859 name her among the heirs in the form the clerk used for all of them: "Andrew J. Greenwell and Martha J. Greenwell his wife." Her sisters stand in the same list beside their own husbands, one of them Celia, who had married Richard Brown ten years before. The censuses show her keeping the Concordia household through three decades, written Martha J. in 1860 and 1870 and Jane in 1880.
Andrew died in 1894, and the deeds that wound up his estate in 1897 and 1898 name her formally: Martha J. Greenwell, widow of A. J. Greenwell, deceased. She lived on another fifteen years and died at Concordia on 11 August 1913, aged eighty nine years ten months and nineteen days, of a cerebral softening her doctor had attended since the previous month, with senility given as contributory. Her nephew Victor Greenwell of Andyville answered the registrar. She was buried at Payneville the following day.
