Julia Catherine Greenwell
Julia Catherine Greenwell was born 30 June 1861 in Meade County, Kentucky, the eighth of the nine children of Andrew J. Greenwell, a farmer and storekeeper of the Payneville river country, and Martha Jane Mills. The family were Catholics of the old Maryland stock that had settled Meade County's river precincts, and Greenwells filled the neighborhood: three of Julia's siblings married other Greenwells.
About 1882 she married James Horace Brown, a Concordia farmer's son whose own mother was a Greenwell. Her uncle Thomas deeded her land in her own name in 1884. Four children were born in Kentucky, and on 4 December 1891 she and Horace sold their land and started for the Missouri bootheel, where two more children came. The 1900 census of Little Prairie Township, Pemiscot County, holds the family's one full portrait, and its two hardest numbers belong to her: eleven children born, six living. Five children were already in the ground before her fortieth year, and their names are not known. When her father's estate was settled she was a non-resident defendant two hundred miles away; the court cancelled her debts to the estate and mailed her the balance of her share.
Horace died in Tywappity Township in March 1919. Julia stayed. The 1940 census finds her at seventy eight heading a household in Ohio Township with her son Andrew, and she died 17 May 1944 at her home six miles southeast of Wyatt, of pneumonia in her final illness, aged eighty two. She had outlived her husband by twenty five years and her eldest son by fifteen. She was buried the next day at Calvary Cemetery in Charleston, the ground that held that son, James Arthur, and his family.
