Martha Pope
Martha Pope was born about 1791 in Georgia. Her maiden name comes from her memorial and from the name of her son Samuel Pope Savage.
She married Sterling King Savage, a North Carolina man, and the family settled in Tennessee, first in Warren County and later in the plateau country that became Grundy County in 1844. Her son Samuel Pope Savage was born in 1808 and her daughter Frances in 1828, so she was raising children for about twenty years.
On 27 August 1850 the census taker found her in District 4 of Grundy County. Martha Savage, 59, born in Georgia, was living with her husband Sterlin, 70, their son Jesse, 38, also born in Georgia, and their daughters Brittana, 25, and Franka, 19. She was marked as unable to read and write. In 1880 her daughter Frances, by then a widow in Sequatchie County, told the census taker her mother had been born in Georgia.
Sterling died in 1854. Martha outlived him by twenty-four years and saw Frances married to George W. Walker and their sons Leroy and Warren born. She died in 1878 and is buried in the Savage Cemetery in Sequatchie County, beside her husband.
