Marthe Dorthea Holst
Marthe Dorthea Holst was born about 1754 and lived at Strømmen in Hurum, on the west side of the Oslofjord, when she married. Holsts of Holmestrand stood as godparents at Hurum christenings in those years, and she was probably of that family. Her parents are not known.
On 17 August 1786 she married Johannes Linde, a bachelor of Våle, with the title Jomfru written before her name. Their daughter Charlotte Cathrine was presented at Våle church in November 1787, and a Jomfru A. E. Holst stood as her godmother. A second daughter, Margarethe Dorthea, followed in January 1790, and a son, Johan, about 1792.
Johannes died young, probably about 1792. She married again, to Mogens Stranger, a procurator, a licensed lawyer, who was about five years older than she was. Their daughter Marthe was born about 1794. Else Bastine was baptized at Hurum on 6 June 1799, when the couple lived at Svelvik.
In the census of 1801 the family lived at Botne, at No. 104. Mogens was fifty-two. Marthe was forty-three and entered as gift 2 gang, in her second marriage. With them were her son Johan Linde, nine, and her daughter Dorothea Linde, eleven, written as hendes, hers. The two Stranger girls were written as deres, theirs. Her eldest, Charlotte, thirteen, was living as a foster daughter with a widowed baker at Strømmen.
She died at Holmestrand on 18 December 1828 as Marthe Dorthea Stranger and was buried on Christmas Eve, aged seventy-four.
