Charlotte Cathrine Linde

Charlotte Cathrine Linde was baptized at Våle church on 6 November 1787, a daughter of Johannes Linde and Marthe Dorthea Holst. Våle is a country parish west of the Oslofjord, inland from Holmestrand. She had been baptized at home as a newborn, and on that day her parents presented her in church. The entry gives her father the title Sr., Signor, used for a man of the town or official class. Her godparents had titles too, among them a Madame Hage and a Jomfru A. E. Holst. Jomfru was the title of an unmarried woman of that class.

Her father died young, before 1801 and probably about 1792. Her mother married again, to Mogens Stranger, a procurator, a licensed lawyer, and moved to Botne with the younger children. Charlotte did not go with them. In the census of 1801 she was thirteen and a fosterdatter, a foster daughter, in the house of Gertrud Cicilia Mandal, a widow of fifty-two who baked bread for a living at Strømmen in Hurum, her mother's home place.

On 10 January 1817 she married Frederik Smith in Fredrikshald church. The register gives them both as about twenty-six. If the Våle baptism is hers, she was twenty-nine. The couple raised their children in Idd parish, in the border country between Fredrikshald and Sweden, at Store Holm, the estate his widowed mother had bought. In 1823 the church book sets her down as Charlotte Smidt of Linde at her daughter Fredrikke's baptism.

Frederik died between 1823 and 1827. On 7 November 1827 she married Hans Reinhold Broch at Idd, a man of thirty-two from the farm Broch, and gave her own age as thirty-seven. A daughter, Johanne Dorthea Broch, was baptized in 1829. The marriage did not last. In the census of 1870 she was living with one servant at Nye Vaterlands Gade 661 in Fredrikshald, as Charlotte Linde Broch, Frue, fraskilt: divorced. She gave her birthplace as Våle parish. In 1875 a Fru Charlotte Broch, divorced, a pensioner with a maid, was living in Idd, probably the same woman with a wrong year of birth. Her death has not been found.

Her mother lived her last years at Holmestrand and died there in 1828. Charlotte's daughter Fredrikke settled in the same town in 1846.
